Quartz glass rods

For demanding applications

Raesch Quarz (Germany) GmbH manufactures quartz glass rods, which are indispensable for state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. Thanks to their exceptional dimensional stability, tensile strength and low OH content, our quartz glass rods are extensively used in the optical fiber industry. In this industry they serve as handle rods in the production of preforms and are an essential component of the process. And due to the rods’ high degree of purity, they are also ideally suited for use in the semiconductor industry. In this case, the rods are an element of the quartz boats which are fabricated for multi-wafer production.

Materials for
quartz glass rods

We produce quartz glass rods using high-purity, quality-tested raw materials. Our production process ensures consistently high material purity and dimensional accuracy. The quartz glass rods are available in the material grades RQ200 and RQ500. Each grade differs in its physical and optical properties and is thus suitable for particular applications.

Quality and
highest precision

Our quartz glass rods are available with outer diameters ranging from 10 to 42 mm and a maximum drawing length of approximately 1650 mm. Using our state-of-the-art vacuum annealing process, the OH content can be reduced to < 5 ppm for improved reaction properties and thermal stability. For chemical applications, the rods are suitable as stirring tools for aggressive liquids thanks to quartz’s excellent chemical resistance. The rods’ thermal stability makes them the perfect material for numerous high-temperature processes where dimensional and mechanical integrity are required (such as for handles). Low ovality and high mechanical stability also make our rods the ideal handling material for rotationally symmetrical manufacturing processes such as in the optical fiber industry.

Finishing of
quartz glass rods

At the customer's request, we can provide additional finishing steps to our quartz glass rods. With state-of-the-art cutting machines, we can trim (fine) cut rods to the desired length before delivery. We also offer vacuum annealing to provide a residual OH content down to <5 ppm, which improves high-temperature dimensional and mechanical integrity. These finishing steps, as well as the option for quartz glass calibration , make us a preferred rod manufacturer to the optical fiber, semiconductor and chemical industries.

Frequently asked questions

Quartz glass rods are made of high-purity quartz glass and are characterized by their excellent optical and thermal properties. Due to their high degree of purity, they are ideal for use as quartz glass boats, which play a key role in wafer finishing in the semiconductor industry. Their precise dimensional stability also makes our quartz glass rods indispensable components in the optical fiber sector, where they are used as handle rods to support the process in preform manufacturing.

Production takes place using the so-called single-stage drawing process, in which quartz glass is processed directly in melting furnaces. This enables the production of rods with variable diameters and lengths without any intermediate steps. Quality is ensured by the processing and doping of the quartz sand as well as by modern melting technologies.

Quartz glass rods offer high chemical resistance, extreme temperature resistance, and excellent light transmission in the UV and visible range. This makes them ideal for demanding industrial applications where conventional materials would fail.

Yes, we offer customized solutions. This includes custom dimensions, special finishing processes such as cleaning, calibration, or annealing, as well as adaptations for high-tech manufacturing processes.

Quartz glass rodsFor stringent requirements

Fused quartz, a type of quartz glass, is characterized by its simple chemical composition which consists almost exclusively of silicon and oxygen (silicon dioxide). In contrast to conventional glass, it does not contain any dopants such as soda or calcium oxide. Notable advantages of fused quartz include its exceptionally high temperature and thermal shock resistance, and its extremely low level of impurities. Owing to fused quartz’ outstanding physical and chemical properties, this special glass is particularly suitable for applications with stringent requirements.
